More overnight M4 closures as work on new bridge moves forward

NATIONAL Highways is planning four nights of overnight closures on the M4 between Bristol and Bath later this month as part of work to replace the A432 Badminton Road bridge.

The motorway will be shut overnight on the evenings of March 26, 27, 28 and 29 for hard shoulder resurfacing as the agency prepares to reinstate the carriageway under the bridge.

Further closures will take place in April and May.

Recent wet weather has held up work to connect the new bridge over the M4 to the embankment.

But the body responsible for the motorway network insists the A432 is still on track to reopen in the spring.

‘Positive progress’ despite wet weather

A National Highways spokesperson said: “We’re building earthworks on both sides of the M4.

“After earthworks, we’ll move on to lighting, signals, crossing points and surfacing. Then we’ll connect the bridge to A432 and A4174 Bristol Ring Road.

“We have made positive progress on the bridge despite the wet weather in January and February, which has impacted the programme slightly.

“Despite the weather, the abutment construction has been progressing well and should be completed by Easter, and we are still on target to open the road in spring.

“We have some overnight closures in March to allow for the resurfacing of the hard shoulder, with further overnight closures in April when we will adjust the lane positions to allow for central reservation work, and in May to remove all traffic management from the M4.”

The April overnight roadworks will take place from the 27th-30th, and the May works from the 26th-29th.

During the overnight closures a diversion will be in place via the M32, A4174, A420 and A46
