A RACING team based at a primary school is celebrating its most successful year yet.
The Engineering Club at Frampton Cotterell C of E Primary School has a new a team of Year 6 pupils every year, building a Greenpower Goblin electric racing car, which it races against other schools.
Now in its eighth year, the latest team was known as the Frampton Fireworks, and won four awards at two Greenpower race events.
After honing the car’s performance and their driving skills at a ‘pre-season friendly’ against St Michael’s Primary School in Stoke Gifford and Horfield C of E Primary School, the Fireworks competed against 18 other cars at Renishaw New Mills engineering works at Wotton-under-Edge, where they won the award for Best Portfolio.
After some engineering improvements followed, giving them a third-place finish in the Slalom, another Portfolio Award and second place overall at Renishaw Miskin in South Wales.
Retired engineer Steve Harrison, who started the team in 2018, said: “The team said the process was a very long but fun one, that resulted in a magnificent car.
Science skills
“The club teaches practical skills in science, technology and engineering, but much more besides, including finance, teamwork, creativity, initiative and resilience.
“It’s consistently the most popular after-school club and I would encourage any school to consider starting a team.”
The team was supported by sponsors Marbas Group, Beechwood Medical Practice, PPB Engineering Technology, C S Simmons Engineering and AJ Homes.
