Woman dies in M4 crash involving five vehicles

A WOMAN has died after a crash on the M4 near Hambrook.

Emergency services were called shortly before 1pm today after five vehicles collided on the westbound carriageway between the M32 junction and the M4 Almondsbury interchange.

A police spokesperson said: “Sadly a woman in her 60s tragically died at the scene.

“Her next of kin has been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time.

“They are being offered support by a specially-trained family liaison officer.”

Police want to hear from any witnesses to the collision or drivers who have dashcam footage they think could help their investigation.

Anyone who can help should call 101 and quote the incident reference number 5224 036 088, or contact officers online.

Drivers advised to ‘avoid travelling’

The westbound carriageway was expected to be closed until 10pm as investigations into the incident continue.

National Highways, which is responsible for the motorway, said: “The westbound carriageway will need to be closed for some time and we would advise road users to avoid travelling in the local area and use alternative routes if possible.”

Long delays were reported on the approach to the closure, with queues stretching almost to the A46 junction at Tormarton at one point.

Drivers were being diverted onto the A4174 through Filton.

National Highways was advising motorists to visit its website at www.trafficengland.com, visit @HighwaysSWEST on twitter or call 0300 123 5000 for urgent assistance.
